Doctors in Afghanistan were stunned when Asree Gul was born with the deformity in July
2013.

the womb, and fused with Asree foetus.
surgeons operated on her last week, painstakingly separating vital nerves and blood
vessel that were connected to the extra skull.
she was discharged on Wednesday (Sept 25, 2013) after doctors hailed the operation a
success.

Tiny Asree was photographed with bandaged - up head, cuddling up to her sister before

she left hospital in Nangarhar.
Asree’s parent approached the hospital because the deformity was making it difficult for
her to sleep and had led the family to be ostracized by their farming community.
they couldn't afford the two thousand five hundred to three thousand seven hundred euro
cost of their treatment, so surgeon Ahmad Obaid Mojadid agreed to her for free.
Mojadid described the surgery as “the first of its kind in Afghanistan east”. he also added
‘we don't have very developed equipment, but we are very happy to have conducted the
operation successfully”.
